Welcome to our Year 6 page and welcome to our new children and Parents!
We are Mr Hudson, Miss Raftery, Mrs Anderson and Miss Blackburn.
With the introduction of a new National Curriculum we have a great deal of exciting projects to take on. We will have a really strong focus on Grammar and how it improves our writing in all of our subjects.
This term is particularly important as we lay the foundations for year 6. A big push on basic skills will be needed in literacy and maths to underpin our progress in these areas. The children will all be working towards specific 'basic skills' targets in these subjects. Handwriting and joining script takes on a huge importance with the new expectations for writing so we will be working closely with your child on this early in the term.
Maths will be focusing on basic skills - the targets for which can be found as a link at the bottom of the page. Place value, addition and subtraction using written methods will be taught in the Autumn term. We will be promoting using and applying maths across the curriculum through BIG MATHS - showing how the things that we learn day to day are used and applied in real life situations. We will also begin looking at investigating problem solving in maths using a new technique - STOPs maths.
In other subjects we will be investigating How Phileas Fogg would manage to travel around the world today using modern methods. We will be taking in a wide variety of countries and cultures on our way, using mapping skills, number skills and also documenting our journey as we go!
In Spanish, Miss Leyland will be teaching the children all about holidays, weather and the planets! In science we are learning all about the human body and it's functions, including how to stay healthy.
PE will be taught on Thursday afternoons. Please make sure your child has their kit in school every week.
Learning styles - We will be doing lots of active learning - moving around the room, school and garden to share our ideas, mixing with new people and debating our points of view and ideas.
As always, we are here to help and support both your child and you throughout the year, so please call school to make an appointment to see us if you have any queries or concerns.
Please use links at bottom of page to help with your learning when not in school, as they will be useful for you SATs revision.
HELPFUL PAGES FOR PARENTS TO SUPPORT THEIR CHILD'S LEARNING
On Tuesday 7th March, Year 6 visited Chester Zoo as part of their science learning on Evolution and Adaptation. We have really enjoyed seeing how animals have changed and survived in different habitats. It was great to see the Secret Life of the Zoo for real!
Since our visit we have learned about Charles Darwin and have conducted our own investigation about the adaptation of birds' beaks.
Half term update.
Welcome to our half termly update. The children have settled in really well and are working hard towards their new targets. We have covered place value - understanding the value of digits in REALLY BIG numbers and then managed to order them, round them and use them in calculations! We have covered addition and subtraction and are just beginning multiplication and division. Ask the children to help with the weekly shopping calculations! In literacy we have covered verbs, adverbs, adjectives, nouns, collective nouns and proper nouns as well as applying all our grammar knowledge to our writing across the curriculum in RE and history. We are also planning our science day to be held before half term! Phew!!
Come in to see the wonderful writing we have added to this amazing display!
We have been solving problems using place value and mental strategies.
