Prevent
The Prevent Duty: Safeguarding Our Students
At our school, the safety and wellbeing of our students are our highest priorities. This includes protecting them from the risk of radicalisation and extremist influences.
What is Prevent Duty?
The Prevent Duty is a government initiative designed to stop people from being drawn into terrorism or supporting extremist ideologies. Much like our policies on anti-bullying, online safety, and child protection, Prevent is a safeguarding responsibility.
Our goal is to identify students who may be vulnerable and provide them with the support they need to stay safe.
How Does This Work in Practice?
We integrate the principles of Prevent into our daily school life by fostering an environment of curiosity, respect, and critical thinking. This includes:
-
Promoting Diversity: Exploring different cultures and religions to build mutual understanding.
-
Critical Thinking: Teaching students how to question information they see and recognise bias.
-
Safe Spaces: Providing a secure environment where students can discuss sensitive or controversial issues openly with staff.
-
Digital Safety: Using robust internet filters to block access to extremist content and vetting all external visitors.
-
Staff Training: Ensuring our team can identify early signs of vulnerability and know how to offer support.
Prevent and British Values
A core part of the Prevent Strategy is the promotion of "Fundamental British Values." These are woven into our curriculum to help students become well-rounded, compassionate citizens:
-
Democracy: Understanding how they can influence decision-making.
-
The Rule of Law: Appreciating that laws protect us and keep us safe.
-
Individual Liberty: Encouraging freedom of speech and the right to make informed choices.
-
Mutual Respect & Tolerance: Respecting those with different faiths, beliefs, or backgrounds.
Frequently Asked Questions
"Is my child too young to learn about extremism?" We do not discuss complex or graphic topics with younger children. Instead, for our younger students, Prevent focusses on building self-esteem, kindness, and a sense of belonging. All discussions are carefully tailored to be age-appropriate.
"Is extremism really a risk in our area?" Extremism is not limited to one specific group or ideology; it can include political, religious, or misogynistic extremism (such as "incel" culture). While some risks are more prevalent than others, our aim is to give students the "digital resilience" to handle any extremist views they may encounter throughout their lives.
